Pakistan is gearing up for the launch of 5G technology, but government officials say this step will only be taken once the country’s digital infrastructure and internet capacity are ready to meet the demands of the next generation of connectivity. Federal Minister for IT and Telecommunication Shaza Fatima has outlined a comprehensive plan focusing on expanding bandwidth, upgrading infrastructure, improving access, and fostering digital skills among the population.
Central to the government’s strategy is the decision to double Pakistan’s available internet spectrum. The current spectrum of 274 MHz, which has remained unchanged since its last auction, will be increased to over 540 MHz. This expansion is viewed as essential for enabling a robust and reliable 5G rollout, ensuring that quality of service and capacity meet global standards.
Beyond spectrum enhancement, Pakistan is investing in its global connectivity by broadening its network of submarine cables. The country currently operates seven undersea cables and is set to add three more, including one that will link Pakistan to the world’s largest submarine cable system. These additions are expected to significantly improve bandwidth and internet reliability, which are crucial for supporting technologies like artificial intelligence, cloud computing, and high-definition streaming.
Recognizing that digital access also depends on affordability, the government is preparing a smartphone financing initiative that will allow citizens to purchase devices through installment plans. This policy aims to bridge the digital divide by making cutting-edge technology more accessible, thus enabling broader participation in online education, remote work, and digital services.
To support the growing demand for digital skills, the government has accelerated its DigiSkills program, which recently trained 100,000 individuals in various technological fields. The next phase aims to equip one million students with expertise in artificial intelligence, further integrating Pakistan into the global technology landscape and opening up new employment opportunities.
Government efforts also include a focus on gender inclusion in the digital economy. Shaza Fatima emphasized the need for women to play a leading role in Pakistan’s digital transformation, advocating for safer and more accessible digital spaces to ensure women have equal opportunities in the tech sector. This approach is seen as vital not only for fairness but for maximizing the country’s human resource potential.
