**Pakistan Steps Up Carbon Market Readiness in Collaboration with UNEP-SPAR6C Initiative**
In a move to accelerate its participation in global climate action, Pakistan is ramping up its preparations for engaging in international carbon markets under the Paris Agreement’s Article 6. The effort was highlighted during a high-level meeting between Federal Minister for Climate Change and Environmental Coordination, Dr. Musadik Malik, and a delegation from SPAR6C (Supporting Preparedness for Article 6 Cooperation), a United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) initiative.
SPAR6C is a five-year program assisting Pakistan, Colombia, Thailand, and Zambia in building capacity to take part in international carbon trading—a key mechanism for achieving emission reduction targets and fostering sustainable economic growth. The discussions focused on strengthening Pakistan’s readiness for Article 6 cooperation, particularly through supporting students who have been trained or conducted research in this field.
The delegation and minister reviewed the ongoing SPAR6C student sponsorship initiative, which connects emerging Pakistani experts to national carbon market strategies. Future opportunities for leveraging this talent pool in upcoming projects were also explored. In addition to examining the status of existing carbon trading opportunities, both sides discussed potential new projects that could position Pakistan as a regional leader in climate-friendly economic development.
Dr. Musadik Malik underscored Pakistan’s resolve to develop a robust, transparent, and inclusive carbon market. He stressed the importance of deepening partnerships with international initiatives like SPAR6C and engaging with the domestic private sector to ensure that Pakistan is climate-ready while supporting sustainable economic growth. The meeting signaled a strong commitment to aligning national initiatives with evolving global carbon market standards and opportunities.
