The Standing Committee on Water Resources, chaired by MNA Ahmed Ateeq Anwer, was briefed on the scale of damage from recent floods and directed government agencies to provide detailed follow-ups on mapping, meteorological services, and breaches in flood protection infrastructure.

The committee met at Parliament House in Islamabad and heard a detailed briefing from the Ministry of Water Resources on cumulative losses from the recent floods. Officials reported 985 deaths and 1,062 injuries. Infrastructure losses included 6,748 kilometres of roads and 29 bridges destroyed, 8,481 houses damaged, and 6,509 livestock fatalities.

Committee members were told that initial floodplain maps were produced years earlier using satellite data in collaboration with relevant departments. Progress on updating and further developing these maps has been limited: only Punjab and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa have made notable advances, while other provinces have shown little movement.

The committee directed the Pakistan Meteorological Department to deliver a comprehensive briefing at the next meeting outlining its functions, recent performance and achievements, and how its work informs flood forecasting and risk reduction.

Officials also reported that six sections of flood protection infrastructure have been breached. The committee requested complete, itemized details of these breaches to be presented at the following session so that remedial and preventive measures can be planned.

Attendees included MNAs Sohail Sultan, Muhammad Idrees, Zulfiqar Ali Behan, Shazia Marri, Mir Munawar Ali Talpur, Syed Waseem Hussain, Mian Khan Bugti and Shamaila Rana, along with officials from the Ministry of Water Resources.
