Prime Minister Muhammad Shehbaz Sharif met with President Dr. Masoud Pezeshkian in Ashgabat on the sidelines of the International Year of Peace and Trust, where both leaders reaffirmed the strong support their countries extended to each other after external aggression earlier this year. The meeting underscored efforts to deepen Pakistan Iran ties across political and economic fronts.
The leaders reviewed outcomes of the 22nd meeting of the Pak-Iran Joint Economic Commission held earlier this year and agreed to pursue practical measures to raise bilateral trade, operationalize border markets and strengthen border security. Reinvigorating transport connectivity through the Islamabad-Tehran-Istanbul rail network was highlighted as a priority to stimulate commerce and connectivity between the two neighbours.
The Prime Minister urged the Afghan Taliban regime to take meaningful action to address Pakistan’s serious security concerns over terrorism emanating from Afghan soil, calling for concrete steps to prevent cross-border militant activity. This security focus featured prominently in discussions on regional stability and the mutual interest in a secure borders approach.
Both leaders exchanged views on wider regional and global developments and discussed ongoing peace efforts in Gaza. President Pezeshkian expressed appreciation for the timely exchange of views and reaffirmed Iran’s desire to further strengthen ties with Pakistan. The tone of the meeting reflected a shared commitment to constructive engagement.
The talks reflected close and brotherly relations rooted in shared history, culture and faith, with both sides agreeing to continue regular high-level engagements and consultations to consolidate cooperation. The Prime Minister conveyed warm regards and good wishes for His Eminence Ayatollah Khamenei, the Supreme Leader of Iran, as part of the broader diplomatic outreach aimed at sustaining momentum in Pakistan Iran ties.
