President Asif Ali Zardari visited Iraq from 20 to 24 December 2025 at the invitation of the Iraqi President, holding a series of high-level meetings that advanced Pakistan Iraq relations. During the official visit he held productive talks with both the Iraqi President and the Prime Minister, and met the Governors of Najaf and Karbala to discuss closer cooperation.
The President also paid respects at the holy shrines in Baghdad, Najaf, Kufa and Karbala, underscoring the cultural and religious bonds that complement the diplomatic engagement between Islamabad and Baghdad. These visits reinforced people-to-people ties and highlighted the importance of religious heritage within the broader Pakistan Iraq relations agenda.
Islamabad welcomed the outcome of the trip as a step toward deeper bilateral engagement across political, economic, defense and cultural spheres. The visit is expected to pave the way for enhanced cooperation and follow-up exchanges that build on the momentum created during the meetings and shrine visits.
