The federal government of Pakistan, led by the Ministry of National Food Security and Research, has taken decisive action to address soaring sugar prices in the country. Following a series of high-level meetings chaired by Federal Minister Rana Tanveer Hussain with the Pakistan Sugar Mills Association (PSMA) and key stakeholders from all provinces, authorities have launched a nationwide crackdown on hoarders and market manipulators. These interventions have resulted in a notable reduction in sugar prices, which have dropped from more than Rs 200 per kilogram to between Rs 175 and Rs 180 per kilogram.
During the discussions, Minister Rana Tanveer Hussain voiced strong concern over the artificial inflation of sugar prices, warning all parties involved in hoarding and market manipulation of strict action. He highlighted that targeted operations are currently underway across the country to address those disrupting the sugar supply chain. The minister specifically cautioned sugar mills withholding their current stocks from the market, declaring that hoarding will not be tolerated under any circumstances.
The federal minister instructed all provincial governments to work closely with sugar mills to ensure timely release of stocks and maintain uninterrupted supply to markets. He also expressed concerns about the role of intermediaries and profiteers who exploit price fluctuations for undue gains, affirming that federal and provincial authorities are initiating both legal and administrative measures to curb profiteering.
In addition, Minister Hussain chaired a steering committee meeting to address all technical, administrative, and operational aspects related to sugar imports. The government reported that these issues have been thoroughly examined and resolved to safeguard market stability.
Emphasizing the government’s commitment, Rana Tanveer Hussain vowed that protecting the public from exploitation and stabilizing the prices of essential commodities remains a top priority. He assured that transparency and accountability will be maintained at every level to ensure citizens’ interests are safeguarded.
