Federal Minister for Climate Change and Environmental Coordination Dr. Musadik Malik met with Sweden’s Ambassador to Pakistan, Alexandra Berg von Linde, in Islamabad to discuss stepped-up cooperation on climate resilience, post-flood recovery, technology transfer, and green innovation. The talks focused on urgent needs arising from recent devastating floods in Pakistan and explored collaborative initiatives including support for youth-led green startups, academic exchanges, and the proposed Green University of Pakistan. Ambassador Berg von Linde also invited Dr. Malik to visit the Swedish Pavilion at COP 30 in Brazil as the two sides pledged to maintain close dialogue on climate diplomacy.
In the meeting, Dr. Malik emphasized the severe human and infrastructure impacts of recent floods and called for increased climate finance, access to climate technologies, and targeted resilience-building measures to protect vulnerable communities from worsening climate shocks. Both officials stressed that timely support and technology transfer are critical to strengthening Pakistan’s adaptive capacity.
The discussion identified areas for enhanced Pakistan–Sweden bilateral cooperation on climate action and sustainable development. Participants highlighted green innovation as a key focus, with particular attention on promoting youth-led startups that can deliver scalable solutions for mitigation and adaptation.
A central proposal reviewed during the talks was the concept of a Green University of Pakistan envisioned as a regional hub for climate education, research, and innovation. The idea aims to foster interdisciplinary learning, incubate green technologies, and build local capacity to address climate challenges.
Academic and research collaboration featured prominently in the conversation, with both sides expressing interest in student and faculty exchange programs between Pakistani and Swedish universities. The exchanges would support joint research, curriculum development, and knowledge-sharing in areas such as sustainable urban planning and resilient infrastructure.
Delegates also discussed sustainable habitats and urban resilience, exploring how city planning and infrastructure investments can reduce climate vulnerability and enhance long-term sustainability. These deliberations underscored the need for integrated approaches that combine policy, finance, and technical expertise.
Ambassador Alexandra Berg von Linde extended an invitation to Dr. Malik to visit the Swedish Pavilion at COP 30 in Brazil, and both parties reaffirmed their commitment to continued engagement on global climate diplomacy. They agreed to keep channels of communication open and to explore joint initiatives aimed at a more sustainable and resilient future.
