Federal Minister for Health Syed Mustafa Kamal held a meeting with the CEO of Gavi, the Vaccine Alliance, Dr. Sania Nishtar, to discuss strategies to further strengthen Pakistan’s immunization system and ensure reliable access to life-saving vaccines for children across the country.
During the meeting, both sides emphasized the importance of enhancing the local production of vaccines, which Mustafa Kamal described as a strategic priority for long-term sustainability and protection of national health. He praised Gavi’s historic support for immunization programs in Pakistan and called for the alliance’s assistance in establishing local vaccine manufacturing capabilities. The goal, he said, is to guarantee an uninterrupted supply of essential vaccines for Pakistani children, particularly by sourcing vaccines from countries with robust supply chains.
The health minister highlighted the urgent need for the Hexavalent vaccine and stressed the importance of securing access to vital vaccines amidst Pakistan’s current financial challenges. He reiterated the continued commitment to protect every child from vaccine-preventable diseases, especially as Pakistan intensifies efforts to eradicate polio.
Dr. Sania Nishtar commended the recent progress made by Pakistan’s Expanded Program on Immunization, noting significant advancements in vaccine coverage, surveillance, and strategic planning. She assured that the key points raised by the health minister would receive full attention, and reaffirmed Gavi’s dedication to supporting vaccine delivery for Pakistani children. Dr. Nishtar also emphasized that Pakistan’s priorities would take center stage in Gavi’s future policy decisions.
Also present at the meeting were Secretary Health Syed Waqarul Hassan, senior health officials, and representatives from the World Health Organization, UNICEF, the Gates Foundation, the FDI, and the national polio program.
