A meeting of Pakistan’s National Assembly Standing Committee on House and Library, chaired by Deputy Speaker Syed Ghulam Mustafa Shah, focused on ongoing development and security issues at the Parliament Lodges. Committee members voiced concerns about delays in construction projects and highlighted persistent infrastructure and safety challenges faced by lawmakers and staff.
Officials provided a comprehensive update on the development of 104 new family suites and 400 servant quarters at the Parliament Lodges, but committee members raised alarm over the slow progress and called for an expansion of the existing parking facilities. The need to complete these long-standing development projects promptly was emphasized, reflecting ongoing difficulties in addressing accommodation needs for legislators.
Security at the Parliament Lodges also came under scrutiny. The committee recommended installing additional CCTV cameras to monitor the premises more effectively, noting that only 30 out of the 40 existing cameras are currently functional. Authorities from the Capital Development Authority (CDA) assured the committee that all cameras would be fully operational within three months.
Concerns were also raised regarding the limited police presence, with only six Islamabad Police personnel currently deployed at the Lodges. The committee underlined the need to bolster security measures to ensure the safety of lawmakers and residents.
Maintenance problems such as water seepage, termite infestations, and other structural issues remain unresolved, and the committee called for immediate attention to improve living conditions at the Parliament Lodges.
The meeting was attended by Members of the National Assembly Ijaz Hussain Jakhrani, Muhammad Moin Aamer Pirzada, and Aliyah Kamran, as well as senior officials from the Capital Development Authority, Islamabad Police, and the Ministry of Finance.
