PMAS-AAUR Hosts Renewable Agriculture Workshop

PMAS-AAUR hosted an international workshop on renewable agriculture showcasing solar irrigation, biogas and precision farming to boost Pakistan's food security.

An international workshop on renewable energy applications for modern sustainable agriculture convened at Pir Mehr Ali Shah Arid Agriculture University Rawalpindi, organised by the Department of Energy Systems Engineering, Faculty of Agricultural Engineering & Technology, PMAS-AAUR. The event brought together national and international experts, faculty, researchers and students to discuss practical pathways for renewable agriculture in Pakistan.

Prof. Dr. Qamar-uz-Zaman, Vice Chancellor PMAS-AAUR, presided over the session and thanked the Chief Guest while underlining the university’s commitment to research-driven innovation. He noted that PMAS-AAUR has consistently addressed contemporary agricultural challenges through technology and international collaboration, and emphasised the institution’s role in training a new generation of professionals to apply renewable agriculture and smart farming solutions across the country.

Ms. Yasmin Paracha, Director DAAD Islamabad, attended as Chief Guest and praised the university’s proactive efforts to promote renewable energy education and research. She stressed that transitioning to clean energy is both an environmental and agricultural imperative, noting that sustainable food production depends on how effectively we integrate renewable technologies into our farming systems. She called for stronger academic linkages and capacity-building to equip young engineers and scientists with hands-on knowledge.

Speakers from various universities and research organisations presented on themes including solar-powered irrigation, biogas and biomass utilization, energy-efficient greenhouse systems and smart energy management for precision farming. The discussions highlighted the link between cost-effective renewable solutions and rural development, with a focus on making Pakistan’s agriculture more resilient to climate pressures. At the close of the workshop the Vice Chancellor presented shields and souvenirs to the Chief Guest and distinguished speakers. The event was attended by deans, directors, faculty and a large number of students, reflecting growing institutional commitment to advancing renewable agriculture across the region.
