Pak Mission Society (PMS) and the Pakistan Agricultural Research Council (PARC) signed a Letter of Intent at the Arid Zone Agriculture Research Center in Umerkot to deepen collaboration across cooperative research, scientific communication, technology innovation and capacity building. The agreement formalises a joint effort to translate research into practical, climate-smart farming practices for local communities.
The PMS PARC partnership will focus on establishing orchards planted with drought-resilient varieties that can better withstand water stress, responding directly to the needs of farmers working in arid environments. Partners say these orchards will serve as living examples of how improved plant material and management techniques can conserve scarce water while maintaining productivity.
In addition, the collaboration includes development of two fish farms designed to operate in high-salinity water areas, offering a way to expand aquaculture where traditional freshwater systems are unviable. By tailoring fish farm techniques to saline conditions, the initiative aims to open new livelihood options for communities affected by salinity and water scarcity.
Capacity building and scientific communication are central to the PMS PARC partnership, with both organisations committing to share knowledge, train stakeholders and promote technology innovation that can be adopted at the community level. The agreement positions Umerkot’s research centre as a hub for demonstrating scalable, climate-resilient interventions to support farming families.
Officials involved described the collaboration as a practical step toward bringing climate-smart solutions directly to the field, combining research expertise with on-the-ground implementation to help farmers adapt to increasingly challenging environmental conditions.
