Prime Minister Muhammad Shehbaz Sharif inaugurated the upgradation of the Geoscience Advanced Research Laboratories (GARL) in Islamabad on 17 October 2025, marking a move to strengthen the country’s geoscience capabilities. The GARL upgrade is intended to bolster laboratory infrastructure and technical resources for scientists working on Pakistan’s geological studies.
The GARL upgrade will provide enhanced facilities and modern equipment to support research into the nation’s earth systems, including studies related to seismic activity, mineral mapping and environmental monitoring. Expanded access to improved instruments is expected to help researchers and students pursue more advanced investigations across the geosciences.
By advancing the Geoscience Advanced Research Laboratories, the government aims to support local scientific capacity, training and evidence-based study of Pakistan’s geological landscape. The Islamabad project signals a continued emphasis on strengthening research infrastructure to meet national scientific needs through the GARL upgrade.
