Rawalpindi Water and Sanitation Agency (WASA) has given approval to clean Nullah Leh and 15 other major rain drains to prevent urban flooding in the garrison city during the upcoming monsoon season.

Although the Punjab government has released funds worth Rs30 million for cleaning Nullah Leh, the civic agency requested an additional Rs40 million from the government.

The Rawalpindi Municipal Corporation (RMC) and cantonment boards have also prepared a cleaning plan for 15 major rain drains in the city and cantonments and requested a grant of Rs120 million.

WASA will deepen and straighten the course of the drains to ensure the timely drainage of rainwater and sewage, keeping the citizens of Rawalpindi safe from floods this year.

The silt-cleaning work will be completed before the pre-monsoon rains, expected to start on May 15, with ongoing cleaning efforts during the monsoon season.
