A training session on the Right of Access to Information Act, 2017 was held in Islamabad to promote transparency, accountability, and empower citizens by enhancing their access to public information. The event was organized jointly by the Pakistan Information Commission and the National Lobbying Delegation at the Information Service Academy.
During the session, Information Commissioner Ijaz Hassan Awan outlined the key provisions of the Act, emphasizing that all public bodies are legally required to proactively disclose information, keep proper records, and respond promptly to citizens’ information requests. He described the Right to Information as a vital democratic tool that helps build public trust and supports responsible governance.
Advocate Basharat Masih from the National Lobbying Delegation discussed the positive impact of Right to Information laws in empowering citizens and encouraging democratic participation. He highlighted the role of RTI in addressing issues faced by minorities, particularly stressing the need to enforce quotas in education and employment to ensure equal inclusion of minorities in the country’s development.
Chief Information Commissioner Shoaib Ahmed Siddiqui reaffirmed that access to public information is a constitutional right under Article 19-A. He noted the significant role of the Pakistan Information Commission in promoting transparency and good governance, and praised the efforts of the National Lobbying Delegation for their work in creating a more informed and inclusive society.
The session was attended by members of civil society, public information officers from various government departments, social activists, and minority representatives. Participants engaged in in-depth discussions on enhancing transparency and empowering citizens across Pakistan.
