School Meal Program pilot in Malir will feed 8,000 undernourished students across 40 Karachi schools as SE&LD and WFP finalise central kitchen plans.

A delegation from the World Food Program (WFP), led by Ms. Hilde Bergsma and Mr. Khalid Masood, met with officials of the School Education and Literacy Department Government of Sindh to finalise the scope of the School Meal Program pilot and to identify a feasible location for a central kitchen to serve participating schools.

The meeting was chaired by Mr. Zahid Ali Abbasi, Secretary School Education and Literacy Department Government of Sindh. Attending officials included Mr. Abdul Hanan Shaikh, Additional Secretary SE&LD, Mr. Muhammad Ali Sangi, Director General PDR, and Mr. Prem Sagar, Special Consultant SE&LD, who reviewed operational and logistical aspects of the School Meal Program pilot.

Under the agreed pilot design, the initiative will benefit approximately 8,000 undernourished students across 40 schools in Karachi’s Malir district, delivering nutritious meals through a centrally coordinated kitchen. Both SE&LD and WFP confirmed that lessons from the pilot will guide an expansion of the School Meal Program to additional areas after successful implementation.

WFP representatives expressed appreciation for the cooperative stance of Secretary SE&LD and other provincial officials, with both parties signalling continued collaboration to finalise the central kitchen site and move toward implementation that addresses child nutrition in Karachi schools.
