The Secretary General of the Shanghai Cooperation Organization, Nurlan Yermekbayev, briefed ambassadors representing observer states and dialogue partners at the SCO Secretariat in Beijing on the outcomes of the recent Tianjin summit and on plans to deepen engagement with non-member participants. The meeting reviewed summit achievements, underscored the practical focus of leaders’ decisions, and explored ways to broaden observer and dialogue partner involvement in SCO activities.
The briefing was attended by ambassadors accredited to the People’s Republic of China who represent SCO observer states and dialogue partners, along with the Permanent Representatives of SCO member states based at the Secretariat. The session provided a forum for direct exchange between the Secretariat and external interlocutors about the Organization’s direction and priorities.
Yermekbayev reported on the key outcomes of the Tianjin summit, including decisions reached by the Council of Heads of State and discussions held in the expanded “SCO Plus” format. He described the summit as a milestone that sets long-term directions for the Organization, noting that its distinguishing feature was a focus on delivering results and issuing decisions with tangible, practical significance.
Participants discussed prospects for expanding the participation of observer states and dialogue partners in SCO agenda events. The conversation centered on implementation of the Roadmap for Strengthening Cooperation among Member States and Dialogue Partners, a framework already adopted by the Organization to guide deeper collaboration.
The Secretary General expressed the hope that observers and dialogue partners would complement efforts by SCO member states in addressing new challenges and threats, and would contribute to the development of economic and cultural-humanitarian cooperation across the region.
The briefing concluded with a question-and-answer session in which Yermekbayev addressed a range of queries about the Organization’s activities and the practical steps foreseen to enhance cooperation with observers and dialogue partners.
