From September 22 to 27, 2025 the SCO Secretariat delegation, led by Secretary General Nurlan Yermekbayev, participated in the high-level week of the 80th session of the United Nations General Assembly in New York. The presence of the SCO Secretariat at UNGA80 underscored the organisation’s engagement in global multilateral discussions during a significant anniversary session.
During the visit the delegation held bilateral meetings with senior UN and international officials, including a session with FAO Director-General Qu Dongyu to discuss cooperation on food security and sustainable development issues. The Secretary General also met with Alexander Zouev, Acting Under-Secretary-General of the United Nations for Counter-Terrorism, to review counterterrorism cooperation and information-sharing priorities.
Engagements continued with Li Junhua, Under-Secretary-General for Economic and Social Affairs, focusing on economic and social policy coordination, while Qatar’s Minister of State for International Cooperation, Maryam Bint Ali bin Nasser Al-Misnad, spoke at a high-level meeting marking the 30th anniversary of the World Youth Action Program and at a separate high-level event on primary health care, reflecting shared priorities in youth empowerment and health systems.
The SCO Secretariat delegation conducted the third round of consultations with the United Nations Department of Political Affairs and Peace-building, reinforcing dialogue on peace and security issues. A meeting with the Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs for Political Affairs of the Kingdom of Bahrain, Khaled Youssef Al-Jalahma, further advanced regional diplomatic coordination.
The series of meetings at UNGA80 highlights the SCO Secretariat’s active role in advancing multilateral partnerships and carries implications for regional cooperation that are relevant to Pakistan’s diplomatic interests within the organisation. The engagements in New York aim to translate discussion into practical collaboration on development, security and health priorities.
