Ms. Silwat Saeed, Secretary of the Environment, Planning and Climate Change Department, chaired a meeting on Green Building to review sustainable construction practices and proposed regulatory changes. The session brought together senior officials to assess how building standards can better support energy efficiency, material stewardship and reduced environmental impact.
The meeting, attended by the Director General of the Environmental Protection Agency and the Project Director of the Special Projects and Implementation Unit, focused on practical measures to embed Green Building criteria into permitting, inspections and tendering processes. Participants examined opportunities to encourage low-carbon materials, on-site energy savings and improved waste management during construction.
Officials discussed how proposed regulatory changes could align with existing environmental policy and climate objectives, while strengthening compliance mechanisms and technical guidance for developers. The emphasis on Green Building practices was framed around delivering healthier urban spaces and lowering emissions from the construction sector.
Attendees also explored next steps including drafting amendments for review, stakeholder consultations and developing implementation timelines to translate the meeting’s recommendations into enforceable standards. The discussions aim to ensure that sustainable construction practices are practical, verifiable and beneficial for public health and the built environment.
