SHARP successfully convened a two-day consultative workshop with Public Prosecutors under the UNHCR Protection Project to foster stronger prosecutor coordination and advance understanding of legal and protection frameworks for displaced Afghan nationals.
The sessions clarified mandates of SHARP and UNHCR, reinforced human rights and international protection principles, and provided detailed guidance on the Foreigners Act and prosecutorial duties. Organisers used the platform to support an updated stakeholder directory intended to streamline collaboration and improve rights-based access to justice for displaced communities.
Mr. Ibad ur Rehman, Director Monitoring Prosecution KP, opened the event with remarks praising SHARP’s ongoing commitment to advancing human rights and refugee protections in Pakistan, while urging continued engagement between prosecution services and humanitarian partners to ensure consistent application of protection standards.
Technical sessions were led by SHARP team members including Ms. Memoona Batool Khan, Project Director KP, Mr. Manzoor Ali, Legal Manager KP, Mr. Jehanzeb Khan, Field Manager Haripur, and Mr. Asad Khan Afridi, Team Lead Peshawar, alongside Mr. Sahibzada Younis from UNHCR and resource person Prof. Nadeem Fareed. Presenters focused on practical prosecutorial responsibilities, protection referral pathways, and coordinated responses for displaced Afghans.
At the closing, SHARP CEO Mr. Mudassar Javed underscored the importance of legal partnerships and ongoing collaboration with prosecution authorities to secure fair, rights-based protection and timely justice for displaced populations. Participants committed to follow-up actions to maintain and strengthen prosecutor coordination across relevant agencies.
The workshop concluded with a shared pledge to expand legal support and enhance prosecutorial coordination so that displaced persons receive fair, informed and timely access to justice. Stakeholders in attendance and collaboration included UNHCR Pakistan, IOM Pakistan, the Commissionerate for Afghan Refugees KP, the German Embassy Islamabad, the U.S. Embassy Pakistan, the Embassy of the Netherlands in Pakistan and the Australian High Commission Pakistan.
