Shifa marked World Lung Day with experts on asthma, COPD, TB and palliative care to promote lung health and early diagnosis in Pakistan.

An awareness session at Shifa International Hospital brought together pulmonologists, healthcare professionals and patients to observe World Lung Day under the theme ‘Healthy Lungs, Healthy Life’. The event was led by Dr. Murtaza Kazmi, Activity Director and Consultant Pulmonologist and Chief of Pulmonology, and aimed to raise public understanding of respiratory conditions affecting Pakistan.

Speakers provided the latest global updates on asthma and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) management, highlighted practical approaches to diagnosing pleural effusion (buildup of excessive fluid in the pleural space), and reviewed updated risk stratification and treatment for pulmonary embolism (a life-threatening clot in the lung circulation). The session also addressed the particular challenges of tuberculosis in immunocompromised patients, reflecting concerns seen across clinical practice in Pakistan.

Patients shared personal accounts of living with lung disease, underlining the importance of early diagnosis, accessible treatment and sustained support networks. A panel discussion on palliative care in chronic lung conditions featured Shifa clinicians alongside guest Dr. Naghman Bashir, a chest specialist and senior member of the Pakistan Chest Society, stressing that quality of life must remain central to long-term care strategies for patients and families.

Shifa International Hospital’s Pulmonology Department offers a comprehensive suite of services for Islamabad and the wider region, including a One-stop Pleural Clinic for management of pleural fluid or air, and advanced Endobronchial Ultrasound (EBUS) for accurate, minimally invasive diagnosis of lung diseases ranging from infections to cancer. These capabilities were highlighted as key assets for improving respiratory care locally.

Organisers said that events tied to World Lung Day help reinforce public health messaging and encourage patients to seek timely evaluation, while hospitals and specialists continue to collaborate to enhance diagnosis, treatment and palliative support across Pakistan.
