The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) Field Office in Sialkot has intensified its enforcement action against tanneries failing to relocate to the designated Sialkot Tannery Zone. In a recent operation, the agency sealed washing drums of ten tanneries and issued official notices to three others.
According to EPA officials, the crackdown aims to ensure compliance with environmental regulations and to curb pollution stemming from tannery operations within city limits. The tanneries targeted in this operation had not yet moved their activities to the approved Sialkot Tannery Zone, despite prior warnings from authorities.
By sealing the washing drums of these non-compliant facilities, the EPA seeks to prevent further discharge of untreated effluents and minimize environmental damage. The issuance of notices to three additional tanneries serves as a formal warning and a final call for relocation to the designated industrial area.
The EPA Field Office reiterated that continued violations would result in further legal action, emphasizing its commitment to protecting public health and the environment. The agency urged all remaining tanneries to promptly shift operations to the Sialkot Tannery Zone to avoid punitive measures.
