Sports Grounds – Positive Activities for Youth Should Be Among Government Priorities
By: Zaheer Ahmad Awan
Youth are the true strength and future of any nation. When they are provided with opportunities and a positive environment, they become the driving force behind progress, prosperity, and national development. Developed nations across the world have always made sports, physical fitness, and youth development a key part of their national agenda.
Unfortunately, in our country, sports grounds are rapidly disappearing. Due to unplanned urban expansion and commercial encroachments, areas once reserved for sports have been converted into buildings and markets. As a result, young people are often seen playing in streets, empty plots, or even graveyards—an alarming and unfortunate reality.
The government must ensure that at least one sports ground is established in every Union Council (UC) and that these grounds remain completely free and open to the public.Currently, several sports facilities charge entry or usage fees, which many young people cannot afford. Sports must not be a privilege—it should be a right accessible to all.
Importance and Benefits of Sports,Sports play a vital role in shaping discipline, teamwork, tolerance, confidence, and mutual respect among youth. These values are the foundation of a strong and progressive society. Through sports, young people channel their energy into positive activities, keeping them away from drugs, crime, and other negative influences.
Islam also emphasizes physical health and strength. The Holy Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) said:
“A strong believer is better and more beloved to Allah than a weak believer.” (Sahih Muslim)
This Hadith highlights that strength—both physical and moral—is essential for success in life.
Current Situation and Youth Efforts At present, many Pakistani youth are representing the country in various sports purely through self-effort and limited resources. If the government takes immediate and practical steps to promote sports and positive youth engagement, it will not only help prevent crime, addiction, and moral decline but will also reduce mental and physical illnesses—leading to less burden on hospitals.
The youth of Pakistan are talented, hardworking, and full of potential. What they need is access to proper training, education, and opportunities to participate in sports and cultural activities.
In countries like Japan, strict adherence to sports and health principles has made society so healthy that hospitals there often remain nearly empty. This example proves that sports are not just games—they are the foundation of a healthy and prosperous nation.
Global Examples

  • In China, every school and neighborhood has at least one sports ground, and physical activities are a mandatory part of daily life.

Conclusion Sports fields are not just physical spaces—they are training grounds for peace, teamwork, and moral strength. If the government makes youth engagement through sports a national priority, we can build a healthier, more active, and united nation.A healthy and strong youth is the foundation of a strong Pakistan. The time has come to make sports a national mission so that our youth can shine proudly at national and international levels, bringing honor to Pakistan.
