Embassy of Sweden in Islamabad marks International Day of Peace, urging action for peace through gender equality and education in Pakistan and beyond.

Today, 21 September, the Embassy of Sweden in Islamabad observed the International Day of Peace, recalling the UN General Assembly call for a 24-hour ceasefire and non-violence each year. The embassy highlighted the significance of the day for communities across Pakistan and the world.

The United Nations theme this year, Act Now for a Peaceful World, urges people and institutions to speak up and take tangible steps toward peace. The embassy emphasised that the International Day of Peace is a moment to turn words into action and to promote dialogue and cooperation at every level of society.

Sweden underscored its approach to building a peaceful world by strengthening gender equality and empowering all women and girls. The embassy noted that promoting education, supporting inclusive societies and investing in peacebuilding are central to Sweden’s development assistance, which contributes to stability and resilience globally.

In its message from Islamabad, the embassy reiterated support for initiatives that foster peace and cooperation, and encouraged civil society, educators and policymakers in Pakistan to join efforts that teach future generations the values of tolerance and non-violence. The International Day of Peace was framed as an opportunity for sustained action rather than a single day of observance.

The embassy called on individuals and organisations to reflect on how they can contribute locally to the broader goals of peacebuilding, gender equality and long-term social cohesion, aligning with Sweden’s commitment to support peace efforts both in Pakistan and internationally.
