The signatories urge AI laboratories to review the current AI systems and raise concerns that the current race to develop and deploy machine learning systems is out of control.

They suggest that powerful AI systems should only be developed once their safety can be verified and their risks can be managed.

The primary trigger for the letter was the release of GPT-4 by OpenAI, which is a more powerful version of the language model.

The signatories recommend that AI labs should pause for at least six months and focus on developing safety protocols, AI governance systems, and research to make AI systems more accurate, safe, trustworthy, and loyal. If companies fail to agree, the letter calls for governments to impose a moratorium.
