ISLAMABAD: A two-day live knee and hip arthroplasty workshop, organised by the Department of Orthopaedic Surgery at the Pakistan Institute of Medical Sciences (PIMS), Islamabad, concluded successfully.
The workshop was aimed at improving the practical and surgical skills of orthopaedic surgeons, postgraduate trainees and fellows in modern joint replacement surgery. Renowned arthroplasty surgeons from Pakistan and abroad attended the event as faculty members.
On the first day, live operations of total knee arthroplasty (TKA) were demonstrated, while on the second day, total hip arthroplasty (THA) procedures were shown. The surgeries were transmitted live to the auditorium, enabling participants to observe surgical techniques, pre-operative planning, implant selection and management of practical complications in detail.
The programme also included hands-on sessions, interactive case discussions, an introduction to robotic and computer-assisted arthroplasty, and a direct question-and-answer session with the faculty.
The chief guest, renowned Karachi-based expert Prof Dr Shahid Noor, appreciated the efforts of the organisers and said such academic activities were essential for providing advanced joint replacement facilities in public-sector hospitals like PIMS.
Organising Chairman, President Arthroplasty Society and Vice Chancellor Rawalpindi Medical University Prof Dr Gen Suhail Amin said arthritis of the hip and knee joints was among the major causes of disability in Pakistan. He said the objective of the workshop was to train young surgeons according to international standards so that ordinary patients could receive quality treatment within the country at appropriate and affordable costs.
Course Coordinator and Head of Orthopaedic Unit at PIMS Associate Professor Dr Asfandyar said such workshops played a key role in the training of young consultants. He also acknowledged the support of Prof Ali Shami and Dr Fareed Ullah Khan Zamri in organising the event.
Around 120 orthopaedic surgeons, postgraduate residents and medical students from across the country participated in the workshop. Shields and certificates were distributed at the concluding ceremony.
The organising committee specially thanked the PIMS administration, anaesthesia team, operation theatre staff and industry partners for providing free material and extending support for the workshop.
