On December 6 the University of Agriculture Faisalabad opened the Greyhound Derby Championship at the Tent Pegging Ground where some 60 greyhounds became the centre of attraction for enthusiasts and local visitors.
The event was organised by the Directorate of Farms at UAF in collaboration with Gill Kennel. The Greyhound Derby brought together breeders, farmers and students in a celebration of rural tradition and canine sport.
Prof Dr Zulfiqar Ali, Vice Chancellor of UAF, said the university is widely seen as a custodian of rural culture and that events like the Greyhound Derby not only offer entertainment but also help strengthen bonds between farmers and agricultural scientists. He added that, as the first agricultural institution in the subcontinent, UAF continues efforts to address agrarian challenges through outreach and community engagement.
Dr Muhammad Aslam, Director Farms, said the championship was designed to present the golden moments of rural culture to participants while reinforcing links between farmers and researchers. Chief organiser Dr Haroon Zaman noted that country-bred and local greyhounds took part in the competition, calling it an annual ritual that highlights local breeding and sporting traditions.
Saqib Imtiaz of Gill Kennel emphasised the importance of the Greyhound Derby as a platform for promoting responsible breeding and preserving regional customs. The event served both as entertainment and as a practical forum for exchanging knowledge between the farming community and agricultural experts.
