UN 80th anniversary marked by António Guterres, delegates and artists in a commemorative event highlighting unity, peace and decades of achievement.

“Eight decades of wars prevented, children educated, diseases cured, and lives saved tell us one thing: Anything and everything is possible when we stand united.” These words were delivered by António Guterres as he joined senior officials, UN staff and delegates for a special commemoration of the UN 80th anniversary.

The event brought together policy leaders and cultural figures to reflect on the organisation’s long record of humanitarian and development work. Speakers emphasised how collective action has helped prevent conflicts, expand education and tackle health crises over the past eight decades, framing the UN 80th anniversary as a milestone for global cooperation.

Renowned singer Tiwa Savage and other performers took part in the commemorative programme, using music and art to underline the message of solidarity and shared purpose. The presence of artists alongside diplomats highlighted the role of culture in bridging communities and reinforcing diplomatic efforts.

Throughout the evening the focus returned to the central idea that unity enables progress. The Secretary-General’s remarks tied together past achievements with a call for renewed collaboration among member states, making the UN 80th anniversary both a moment of celebration and a prompt for collective commitment to future challenges.
