During a visit to flood-affected districts of Muzaffargarh and Multan, UNICEF Pakistan Deputy Representative Sharmeela Rasool and Chief of Field Operations and Emergencies Scott Whoolery met families returning to homes damaged by recent floods and witnessed the scale of destruction firsthand.
The scale of the South Punjab floods has left many communities struggling to rebuild while stagnant waters have created an environment for a rise in waterborne and vector-borne diseases, putting children at increased risk across the region.
UNICEF, working with the Government of Punjab and local partners, is restoring access to safe water, installing temporary latrines, setting up Temporary Learning Centres so children can continue their education, and establishing child-friendly Safe Spaces where young people can play, learn and begin to heal from the trauma of displacement.
Officials on the ground say these interventions are critical but not sufficient on their own. Collective action from government agencies, humanitarian partners, donors and communities is vital to scale relief efforts and ensure that every child and family affected by the South Punjab floods can recover and rebuild their future.
