Federal and Punjab officials met in Lahore to discuss measures to strengthen the country’s wheat supply in the wake of recent floods, focusing on policy adjustments, bolstering strategic reserves for the coming year, and a coordinated management strategy to bolster production and distribution.
The Federal Minister for Industries and Production and National Food Security and Research, Rana Tanveer Hussain, held talks with Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz Sharif to review the current wheat policy framework and identify immediate and longer-term actions needed to safeguard the national wheat supply against flood-related disruptions.
A key topic was improving strategic wheat reserves for the next year. Participants examined options to replenish and protect stocks, ensure timely procurement and storage, and reduce vulnerability to weather-related losses, with the aim of maintaining price stability and food security.
They also discussed a comprehensive wheat management strategy and roadmap to guide cultivation, procurement, storage, and distribution efforts. The roadmap is intended to coordinate federal and provincial measures to address supply chain bottlenecks and improve responsiveness to future shocks.
The Chief Minister outlined measures being taken in Punjab to increase wheat production, including efforts to support farmers, optimize planting and harvest practices, and enhance resource allocation. Both sides emphasized the importance of coordinated planning between federal and provincial authorities to secure the wheat supply for the coming season.
