WHO UN cooperation bolstered in Beijing meeting at SCO Secretariat as leaders agreed regular, results-focused collaboration to strengthen global health partnerships.

A meeting on November 14, 2025 at the Shanghai Cooperation Organization Secretariat in Beijing brought Secretary-General Nurlan Ermekbayev together with the United Nations Resident Coordinator in China, Siddharth Chatterjee, alongside heads of several UN specialized institutions based in China.

The Secretary-General highlighted that relations between the World Health Organization and the United Nations have been significantly strengthened in recent years, noting this progress as an example of effective interaction between universal global bodies and transregional organizations.

Participants exchanged views on avenues to build practical, results-oriented cooperation between the WHO and the broader UN system and its specialized institutions. Special attention was paid to agreements reached during the high-level week of the 80th session of the UN General Assembly in New York following the WHO Secretary-General’s contacts with senior officials across the World Organization.

The parties agreed to a regular exchange of ideas and the continuation of close working interaction to translate commitments into concrete outcomes. Stronger WHO UN cooperation at this level is likely to support coordinated responses to public health challenges and could benefit regional partners, including Pakistan, by improving alignment on health initiatives and technical assistance.
