World Bank officials visited Hyderabad to review progress on water and agriculture initiatives in Sindh, meeting project leaders, touring research and irrigation facilities, and acknowledging successful local efforts in sustainable irrigation management.
The delegation was led by Meskerem Brhane, Regional Practice Director for Planet at the World Bank, and Francois Onimus, Task Team Leader for the World Bank’s SWAT and SBIP projects. They were received by senior project officials who outlined current activities and achievements across multiple programs.
Pritam Das, Managing Director, provided an overview of SBIP’s progress, while Jamal Mangan, Project Director for SWAT, briefed the visitors on recent developments and implementation challenges. Liaquat Bhutto, Project Director from the Agriculture Delivery Unit, presented ongoing agricultural initiatives and highlighted efforts to enhance productivity and resilience.
During the visit the delegation inspected the Hydrology Lab and the regional Irrigation Department to assess technical capabilities and water management practices. They also toured the Research Institute at Tando Jam, where staff demonstrated agricultural research aimed at improving crop performance and irrigation efficiency.
At Akram Wah, the mission recognized SIDA’s role in the successful implementation of the SRMP, noting it as a significant achievement in sustainable irrigation management. Officials praised this local example of improved water delivery and institutional coordination.
The visit reinforced collaboration between the World Bank and Sindh authorities and partners, emphasizing continued support for strengthened irrigation systems, better water management, and agricultural research to advance sustainable development across the region.
