Rana Tanveer Hussain, Federal Minister for National Food Security and Research, met today in Islamabad with Syrian Ambassador Dr Ramez Alari to discuss ways to expand Pakistan Syria agriculture cooperation and strengthen bilateral ties.
The minister highlighted that deep historical, cultural and religious links between the two countries provide a firm basis for practical collaboration. He said the agricultural sector holds significant potential and expressed Pakistan’s readiness to broaden trade and technical cooperation with Syria.
Mr Hussain noted that a memorandum of understanding covering agricultural research, technology exchange and food security has already been signed, creating a framework for long-term engagement. He added that once international sanctions on Syria are lifted, the country could emerge as a valuable trading partner for Pakistan in commodities, fresh fruit and value added agricultural products.
To give the partnership an institutional shape and speed up implementation, both sides agreed to establish a Joint Working Group to assess cooperation opportunities in modern farming practices, water resources management, capacity building and the promotion of agricultural trade. The JWG will be tasked with identifying concrete projects and timelines to translate the MoU into action.
The federal minister reiterated Pakistan’s willingness to provide expertise and technical assistance in modern agriculture and food security strategies. He said such collaboration will not only expand bilateral trade but also contribute to sustainable development and shared prosperity in the region through strengthened Pakistan Syria agriculture links.
Ambassador Dr Ramez Alari welcomed Pakistan’s support and affirmed Syria’s commitment to close cooperation in mutually beneficial areas. At the conclusion of the meeting Mr Hussain said Pakistan views Syria as an important regional partner and will work to broaden the scope of cooperation so that the brotherly relationship between the two countries continues to grow.
