Mohsin Nawaz urges officers at the 6th ICT Shooting Competition to prioritise mental strength for better performance and stronger community policing.

Celebrated long-range shooter and sports psychologist Mohsin Nawaz told participants at the closing ceremony of the 6th Islamabad Capital Territory Shooting Competition that mental strength is the decisive factor for success both on the firing line and in daily life.

Addressing shooters and law enforcement officers at Police Lines Headquarters, Nawaz said ‘Your mental health is more powerful than the weapon in your hand’, urging attendees to pay attention to the psychological side of performance and to cultivate disciplined thinking under pressure.

The competition featured weapons such as SMG, MP5 and pistols and attracted strong participation from Shooting Club members and citizens across Pakistan. Organisers framed the event as a platform to promote community policing, reinforce ties between police and the public, and emphasise discipline and precision in shooting sports while highlighting the role of mental strength in competitive outcomes.

The ceremony was attended by DIG Headquarters Malik Jamil Zafar, AIG Logistics Abdul Haq Umrani and AIG Complaint and Investigation Inayat Ali Shah, who presided over the awards presentation. Shields and accolades were given to shooters who demonstrated exceptional skill and professionalism, with recognition spanning different age and gender groups.

Nawaz, recently selected for the Tamgha-e-Imtiaz in recognition of his international success, drew on his background as both an athlete and a sports psychologist. Citing his record of 10 international medals and rare achievements by a Pakistani civilian in European competition, he stressed that many performance lapses have psychological causes and that regular self-checks of the ‘quality of thoughts’ can prevent errors in high-pressure professions like law enforcement.

The event showcased local talent while reinforcing that mental strength, focus and community engagement through sport are essential elements for safer, more effective policing and improved competitive results.
