Benazir Bhutto honored at an Islamabad ceremony with Quran recitation and tributes to her democratic legacy and services to women and the nation.

A Quran recitation and prayer ceremony was held at the residence of Salma Barkat, president of the Pakistan Peoples Party Women’s Wing Islamabad, to mark the eighteenth death anniversary of Benazir Bhutto. The event drew a large gathering of party leaders and workers who paid heartfelt tribute to the late leader’s lifelong commitment to democracy.

Speakers and participants praised Benazir Bhutto as an enduring symbol of political acumen, courage, and resilience. They remembered her not only as the first elected female prime minister in the Muslim world but also as a steadfast advocate for public rights, women’s representation, and democratic institutions.

Those in attendance highlighted how Benazir Bhutto kept the flame of democracy alive during years of dictatorship, exile, and imprisonment. They emphasised that she never compromised on the constitution, parliament, or the people’s right to govern, and that her sacrifices helped shape Pakistan’s democratic struggle.

Reflections on Benazir Bhutto’s tenure noted her focus on health, education, and social welfare initiatives as well as her vocal support for the rights of women and minorities. Participants also recalled her efforts to present a moderate and responsible face of Pakistan abroad and her emphasis on enhancing the country’s diplomatic standing.

Speakers underscored Benazir Bhutto’s encouragement of youth and women to take an active role in politics, calling her legacy a continuing source of inspiration for the next generation of leaders. Her martyrdom, they said, remains a moment of national mourning whose lessons continue to guide those committed to democratic values.

The Islamabad ceremony organised by Salma Barkat and PPP women reaffirmed the party’s respect for Benazir Bhutto’s unmatched services and renewed calls to uphold the principles of democracy and public service she championed.
