The 39th Lahore International Book Fair, held from February 4 to 8 at the Expo Centre Johar Town, continued in full swing as a dedicated literary session on the second day honored women writers. The program Khushboo Ki Zubaan Mein Bol Kabhi was presided over by Salma Awan and brought together readers and writers to celebrate the creative contributions of women to Urdu literature.
Dr Kamran Jahangir, Managing Director of the National Book Foundation, opened the session by highlighting the intellectual depth, contemporary relevance and prominent place of women’s writing in Urdu literature. The event’s guest of honour, Balqis Riaz, joined speakers and attendees in underlining how women writers shape social consciousness and expand the cultural and intellectual diversity of Urdu letters.
Several women authors presented their prose works to warm applause. Readings by Neelum Ahmad Bashir, Musarrat Kalanchvi, Atrat Batool Naqvi, Naveen Roma, Raqia Akbar and Saima Sabih showcased a range of contemporary voices and themes. Renowned poet Sania added musicality to the gathering with a lyrical recitation that captivated the audience. Commentators Najeeb Jamal and Dr Ashfaq Ahmed Wark praised the writers’ contributions and engaged in thoughtful discussion about their creative and intellectual work.
The session was smoothly moderated by Kanwal Behzad, whose management of the program drew positive remarks from attendees. Salma Awan, as president of the session, lauded the National Book Foundation’s role in organizing such initiatives that both encourage women writers and promote Urdu literature. At the close of the event, Dr Kamran Jahangir presented books to participants, reinforcing the Lahore Book Fair’s role as a platform for literary exchange and recognition of women’s voices.
