Bangladesh secures UNGA presidency as students in Pakistan thank Islamabad and criticise India's vote; read reactions and regional implications.

Islamabad — The election of Bangladesh’s Foreign Minister Dr. Khalilur Rahman as President of the United Nations General Assembly has produced a wave of strong reactions within the Bangladeshi community in Pakistan, highlighting regional diplomatic fault lines as the country celebrates a major international achievement.

The Bangladeshi Students’ Association in Pakistan, known as BASAP, issued a statement hailing Dr. Rahman’s victory as a historic moment for Bangladesh. BASAP President Gouhor Muhammad Jawad praised Rahman for representing Bangladesh with dignity and distinction, saying his leadership had earned the country global recognition.

In its statement BASAP expressly thanked Pakistan and other supportive countries for backing Bangladesh in the UN vote and drew attention to India’s opposition. “On behalf of myself and my Bangladeshi people, I extend my heartfelt thanks to the Government and people of Pakistan and other countries for voting in favor of Bangladesh, whereas our neighboring and bordering country India voted against Bangladesh,” the association said, underlining the diplomatic divide exposed by the ballot.

The students’ remarks emphasised improving goodwill between Pakistan and Bangladesh and reaffirmed the value of historical and people-to-people ties. BASAP described the outcome as a shared success for Bangladesh and friendly states that supported its candidature, and delivered a strong message of solidarity: “We are one nation and two countries, Bangladesh and Pakistan. Our hearts are united.”

Observers in Pakistan say the UNGA presidency will bolster Bangladesh’s diplomatic profile and influence in multilateral affairs. The result and the reactions it prompted reflect shifting regional dynamics, with the vote tally spotlighting alliances ahead of future diplomatic engagements.
