SZABMU PhD programs launched in medical and dental specialties, offering standalone clinical doctorates, PMDC-approved MDS tracks and new MHPE courses.

Shaheed Zulfiqar Ali Bhutto Medical University in Islamabad has expanded its doctoral offerings with a set of highly specialized PhD programs in both medical and dental sciences. The new SZABMU PhD offerings include PhD in Surgery, Medicine, Prosthodontics, Operative Dentistry, Dental Public Health, Dental Materials, Cardiology and Pharmacology, giving researchers and clinicians novel pathways for advanced scholarly work.

Several of these programs are being introduced as standalone doctoral degrees for the first time in Pakistan, moving beyond the traditional pattern of confining doctoral study to basic medical sciences or general dentistry. The decision to offer focused clinical and dental PhD tracks signals a deliberate shift in academic structure to align local training with emerging global trends in specialised research.

The SZABMU PhD initiative is designed to bridge the gap between clinical practice and rigorous research by enabling in-depth, discipline-specific investigations. Graduates of these programs are expected to strengthen evidence-based practice, contribute to policy development and drive technological advancement in health care through targeted research projects and interdisciplinary collaboration.

In parallel, the university’s School of Dentistry has secured Pakistan Medical and Dental Council approval for its clinical MDS programmes, including Prosthodontics, Orthodontics, Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery, Pediatric Dentistry and Periodontology. This regulatory endorsement reflects SZABMU’s growing clinical capacity and commitment to national postgraduate education standards.

Further academic developments include the graduation of the first cohort from the Master’s in Health Professions Education programme, a milestone for faculty development, and the introduction of new courses in Lifestyle Modification and Patient Safety aimed at strengthening preventive care and system-wide quality practices.

By expanding its academic portfolio with these specialised degrees and accredited clinical programmes, SZABMU aims to build research capacity, produce a new generation of clinician-scientists and healthcare educators, and reinforce its role as a leading institution for medical and dental education in Pakistan and beyond.
