The Pakistan Football Federation has announced the launch of the District Football Championship 2026, a nationwide programme aimed at revitalising grassroots football and mapping a clear talent pathway from districts to national teams. The initiative was unveiled in Lahore by PFF Chief Operating Officer Muhammad Shahid Niaz Khokhar with Director Media Umaid Wasim and provincial football heads joining virtually.
The PFF said the District Football Championship will see, for the first time, comprehensive professional and administrative support provided to district associations to ensure consistent standards in organisation and competition management. The federation will offer logistical, technical and administrative assistance while District Football Associations will run the events locally.
Khokhar credited provincial and regional FA leadership and PFF President Syed Mohsen Gilani for driving the plan, saying the move is designed to rebuild Pakistan’s football ecosystem from the grassroots. He noted Pakistan football has recently attracted positive attention from FIFA and the AFC and the new focus is to translate that momentum into structured domestic growth through the District Football Championship.
The programme establishes a collaborative framework to coordinate districts, provinces and the federation, and includes representation from all four provincial associations as well as Islamabad, Gilgit-Baltistan and Azad Jammu & Kashmir. Regular consultations and a dedicated committee will finalise operational details by mutual consensus to ensure smooth execution.
The PFF also announced that the Pakistan Football Referee Association will supply qualified referees to maintain professional standards across district matches. Following the district phase, the federation plans to stage a National Club Championship as the next step in the player development pathway, giving standout performers a route into higher-level club competition.
Talented players identified through the District Football Championship will be offered structured training under qualified PFF coaches, with the aim of preparing prospects for representation at various national team levels. The pathway is intended to be merit based and to enable progression from district football to club football and ultimately to national squads.
In parallel, the PFF announced the National U17 Championship scheduled for the first week of September 2026. For the first time provinces will receive strategic support to field competitive U17 sides, with each province entering two teams and Islamabad, Gilgit-Baltistan and Azad Jammu & Kashmir entering one team each. The federation will cover all expenses for participating teams and use the tournament as a platform to identify players for SAFF U17 and AFC U17 qualifiers.
The PFF described the District Football Championship as a major investment in the future of Pakistani football, aimed at strengthening domestic structures, verifying genuine clubs, building capacity at the district level and expanding the use of modern competition management tools to ensure long-term development.
