A meeting of the Pakistan–Ethiopia Parliamentary Friendship Group was held on Tuesday 16 June 2026 in Committee Room No.7 at Parliament House, Islamabad, to deepen Pakistan Ethiopia ties and explore practical avenues for cooperation.
The session was chaired by Hon. Mr. Arshad Abdullah Vohra, MNA, Convener of the Friendship Group, and attended by Members of the National Assembly including Pullain Baloch, Saba Sadiq, Shaista Khan, Ghazala Anjum and Farhan Chishti. The delegation received H.E. Dr. Oumer Hussien Oba, Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of the Federal Democratic Republic of Ethiopia to Pakistan.
Welcoming the Ambassador, the Convener reaffirmed Pakistan’s desire to further strengthen friendly relations with Ethiopia and underscored the role of parliamentary diplomacy in promoting mutual understanding. Recalling his own professional engagement in Ethiopia’s textile sector in 2013, he highlighted the country’s economic transformation and industrial progress as useful reference points for deepening Pakistan Ethiopia ties through trade and investment.
Ambassador Dr. Oumer Hussien Oba thanked the Convener and Members for the warm reception and noted that he had been serving in Pakistan for five months. He identified parliamentary cooperation, trade, education, cultural exchanges and environmental collaboration as priority areas for engagement and informed the Group of the planned formation of a new Ethiopian parliament in September, stressing the importance of institutional linkages between the two legislatures.
Members of the Friendship Group underlined the need to expand parliamentary exchanges and promote closer cooperation in trade, agriculture, education, youth programmes, women’s empowerment, culture, tourism and environmental protection. They also stressed improving connectivity, facilitating business-to-business contacts, increasing scholarship opportunities and promoting people-to-people interaction to build sustained momentum in Pakistan Ethiopia ties.
Concluding the meeting, the Convener thanked the Ambassador for his constructive engagement and reiterated the Group’s commitment to strengthening parliamentary links and expanding cooperation in areas of mutual interest. Both sides agreed to remain in close contact and to pursue practical initiatives to enhance the longstanding friendship between Pakistan and Ethiopia.
