ISLAMABAD: Federal Minister for Information Technology and Telecommunication Shaza Fatima Khawaja on Monday visited Huawei’s Global Service Center (GSC) in Islamabad, where she was briefed on the centre’s operations and interacted with young Pakistani engineers and technology professionals supporting global ICT operations.
The minister was received by Huawei Pakistan CEO Ethan Sun, Huawei Pakistan CEO AI and Cloud Ahmed Bilal Masud, and senior management of the GSC. During the visit, she toured the facility and reviewed its role in providing technology services to international customers.
Speaking on the occasion, Shaza Fatima said Huawei GSC reflected Pakistan’s growing potential as a global hub for technology and IT-enabled services. Describing the model as “exports without shipping containers,” she said Pakistani professionals were increasingly delivering high-value digital services to international markets from within the country.
The minister highlighted Pakistan’s young workforce, saying around 68 per cent of the population was under the age of 30. She said this demographic strength needed to be translated into skilled human capital and global economic opportunities.
Referring to the Huawei-Pakistan training partnership agreed during the Prime Minister’s visit to China, Shaza Fatima appreciated Huawei’s commitment to train 300,000 young Pakistanis in ICT skills. She stressed the need for stronger collaboration among government, industry and academia to build a sustainable technology talent pipeline and connect young Pakistanis with international opportunities.
The minister also appreciated Huawei’s contribution to technical capacity building through its ICT Academies. She encouraged the company to further expand investment, knowledge transfer and mentoring, and to explore opportunities for establishing an R&D centre in Pakistan.
During her interaction with women engineers at the centre, Shaza Fatima appreciated their contribution to Pakistan’s digital economy and underscored the importance of creating greater opportunities for women in the technology sector.
Speaking on the occasion, Ethan Sun said Huawei was proud to contribute to Pakistan’s digital development by strengthening local technical expertise and creating opportunities for Pakistani professionals to participate in the global digital economy.
The Huawei Global Service Center in Islamabad serves as a hub for global technology operations. It provides remote technical support, network operations, service assurance and other advanced ICT services to international customers, while enabling Pakistani engineers and technical professionals to contribute to global technology operations from within Pakistan.
