A recent conference of vice chancellors focusing on higher education reforms in Punjab highlighted the need for academic excellence, quality assurance, research, financial sustainability, and good governance within universities. The event brought together leading academics and experts to discuss new strategies that can help Pakistani universities compete on a global level while supporting the country’s socio-economic development.
The first session, chaired by Dr. Tariq Banuri, former Chairman of the Higher Education Commission in Islamabad, centered on teaching excellence, research, and innovation. The panel included Lt. Gen (R) Muhammad Asghar, former Rector of NUST; Prof. Dr. Kausar Abdullah Malik, a distinguished national professor and Dean of Postgraduate Studies at FCC University Lahore; Dr. Aitazaz A. Farooque from the University of Prince Edward Island, Canada; and Prof. Dr. Uzma Quraishi, Vice Chancellor of Lahore College for Women University. Dr. Athar Osama, a former member of the Planning Commission of Pakistan and founder of INNOVentures Global, served as the moderator.
Participants stressed the importance of updating teaching and research approaches to meet international standards, enhance the quality of education, and stimulate innovation. The discussion also addressed the crucial role universities play in fostering research that supports economic and social progress. Financial sustainability and effective governance were identified as essential pillars for achieving long-term success in higher education.
