Nestled in Viet Nam’s Dong Nai Biosphere Reserve, one of Southeast Asia’s ecological treasures, the landscape remains a sanctuary for endangered Asian elephants and a wealth of biodiversity, including more than 2,300 plant species, 2,800 animal species, and over 30 ethnic communities. However, increasing pressures from illegal logging, unsustainable agricultural practices, and growing human-wildlife conflict have posed significant threats to the integrity of this vital habitat.
To tackle these challenges, a new conservation strategy centered on community empowerment is being implemented. By granting microfinance loans to over 1,000 local households, the project offers families viable alternatives to environmentally damaging activities. These loans support sustainable livelihood options, enabling residents to reduce their dependence on forest resources while improving their quality of life.
With backing from Viet Nam’s Ministry of Agriculture and Environment, the Global Environment Facility, and the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) in Việt Nam, over 2,000 hectares of degraded forest have been restored through active community participation.
