PESHAWAR: Professor Dr Rubina Nazli has assumed charge as Acting Vice Chancellor of Khyber Medical University (KMU), Peshawar, after Meritorious Professor Dr Zia Ul Haq relinquished the office following the completion of his tenure.
According to the latest information, Dr Zia Ul Haq formally handed over the responsibilities of the Vice Chancellor’s office to Dr Rubina Nazli, who is the Dean of Basic Medical Sciences at KMU. She will perform the duties of Vice Chancellor on an acting basis.
The transition was marked by a ceremony held at KMU’s Alexander Fleming Hall. Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Health Minister Khaliq Ur Rehman, Professor Dr Zia Ul Haq, Professor Dr Rubina Nazli, KMU Registrar Inam Ullah Khan Wazir, deans, faculty members and senior administrative officers attended the event.
Speaking on the occasion, Dr Zia Ul Haq presented an overview of his leadership period from 2020 to 2026. He highlighted institutional strengthening, academic improvement, promotion of research, digital transformation and efforts aimed at increasing the university’s contribution to the healthcare system.
Dr Zia said that transforming KMU into a modern, research-focused institution with international recognition had been among the major objectives of his leadership. He appreciated the faculty and administrative staff for their support in introducing digital systems, paperless working and improvements in research and academic standards.
During his tenure, KMU witnessed a significant expansion of its academic and health sciences network. According to the university’s official information, KMU developed into a large health sciences network comprising postgraduate institutes, medical and dental colleges and allied health institutions across Khyber Pakhtunkhwa.
Dr Zia also remained active in academic and policy reforms. Earlier this year, the KMU Academic Council approved several measures, including changes to the migration policy to address problems faced by students shifting between universities and private institutes, along with other academic reforms.
KP Health Minister Khaliq Ur Rehman praised Dr Zia Ul Haq for his services to the university and said his dedication, hard work and administrative capabilities had contributed to KMU’s development. He described the transfer of responsibilities as a smooth transition of leadership.
After assuming acting charge, Professor Dr Rubina Nazli said she would continue efforts to strengthen the university’s academic and research standards, digital transformation and institutional stability. She also expressed her intention to carry forward the vision and mission of the university with the cooperation of faculty, administration and other stakeholders.
The change in leadership is being closely watched as KMU has grown into one of the major health sciences universities in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, with thousands of students enrolled across its network of institutions. The immediate challenge for the Acting Vice Chancellor will be to maintain institutional stability while continuing the academic, research and administrative reforms already under way.
