**EPA Steps Up Enforcement Against Non-Compliant Brick Kilns in Punjab**
The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has intensified its efforts to enforce environmental regulations on brick kilns across Punjab, resulting in the demolition of a kiln in Rahim Yar Khan and the sealing and fining of two others in Jhang and Chakwal for failing to comply with zigzag technology standards. This initiative is aimed at curbing industrial pollution and promoting sustainable practices within the brick-making industry.
EPA teams conducted inspections in multiple districts to verify adoption of zigzag kiln technology, which is widely recognized for its ability to substantially reduce smoke emissions and mitigate environmental impact compared to traditional kiln methods. The crackdown follows a pattern of non-compliance among some kiln operators, despite previous warnings and outreach programs promoting the updated technology.
One brick kiln in Rahim Yar Khan that continued to flout the standard operating procedures (SOPs) required for zigzag technology was demolished by authorities. The kiln’s owner had reportedly ignored repeated EPA directives to implement the mandated pollution-control measures.
In similar enforcement actions, another kiln in Jhang and one in Chakwal were sealed for operating without the required emission-control upgrades. Both facilities were also fined in accordance with established environmental laws. EPA officials emphasized that such penalties are intended to serve as a deterrent to other operators considering bypassing regulations.
The EPA stressed that enforcement activities will remain ongoing throughout the province, with no tolerance for violators. The agency called on all brick kiln owners to adopt environmentally compliant technology and uphold emission standards, underscoring Pakistan’s broader commitment to combating air pollution and addressing climate change.
