Pakistan and Ethiopia have stepped up their efforts to address climate change by holding the “Ethiopia–Pakistan Green Dialogue: Lessons from Ethiopia’s Green Legacy” at the COMSTECH Secretariat in Islamabad. The event, organized by the OIC Standing Committee on Scientific and Technological Cooperation (COMSTECH) in collaboration with the Ethiopian Embassy, focused on sharing successful strategies in environmental sustainability and strengthening cooperation between the two countries.
The programme opened with a recitation from the Holy Qur’an, followed by the national anthems of both nations and a video presentation highlighting Ethiopia’s renowned “Green Legacy” initiative, a mass tree plantation campaign recognized globally for its positive environmental impact.
Professor Dr. M. Iqbal Choudhary, Coordinator General of COMSTECH, welcomed attendees by emphasizing the urgent need for green diplomacy and collective action to address threats like climate change, deforestation, and environmental degradation. Ambassador Dr. Jemal Beker Abdula drew attention to Ethiopia’s achievements through the Green Legacy campaign, which he described as an international benchmark in sustainable reforestation and climate action.
Pakistan’s Senate Chairman, Senator Yusuf Raza Gillani, participated as Chief Guest and described climate change as an urgent reality for Pakistan, which ranks among the most climate-affected countries despite its negligible contribution to global emissions. He praised Ethiopia’s Green Legacy Initiative as a global model and pointed out that both countries share similar challenges that can best be addressed through South-South cooperation. Senator Gillani highlighted Pakistan’s active role in global climate diplomacy, including advocacy for the Loss and Damage Fund at COP27 and initiatives for advancing climate finance at COP29.
Proposing practical steps, Senator Gillani called for the creation of joint task forces, regular parliamentary exchanges, and expanded research partnerships. He also invited Ethiopia’s parliamentary leaders to attend Pakistan’s upcoming Inter-Parliamentary Speakers’ Conference, and concluded by stating that joint efforts can lead to a greener, safer, and more sustainable future.
The event featured remarks from various heads of delegations and dignitaries, all stressing the need for regional and global collaboration for sustainable development and climate resilience. In recognition of significant contributions, Green Legacy Awards were presented, followed by a symbolic tree planting ceremony and a group photograph, symbolizing the partnership and commitment of both countries.
A panel discussion brought together experts and policymakers to share strategies for green initiatives, policy development, and community engagement to drive environmental sustainability. The session concluded with a Q&A and networking lunch, where participants reaffirmed their commitment to deepening cooperation in climate resilience, ecological restoration, and sustainable development between Pakistan and Ethiopia.
The Ethiopia–Pakistan Green Dialogue highlighted the shared vision and commitment of both countries to advancing environmental diplomacy and building a sustainable future for the next generations.
