Authorities have issued alerts for potential glacial lake outburst flooding (GLOF), urban flooding, and landslide risks in northern Pakistan, Punjab, and parts of Balochistan due to rising temperatures and expected heavy rains. Residents living near waterways have been urged to remain cautious, avoid vulnerable infrastructure, and follow official safety advisories.

In Pakistan’s northern regions, particularly Hunza, Shigar, Ghanche, and Chitral, the escalating temperatures combined with forecasted rainfall have increased the threat of glacial lake outburst floods (GLOF), prompting officials to urge communities residing near rivers and lakes to stay vigilant. The risk of sudden and severe flooding in valleys adjacent to glaciers is particularly high, posing potential threats to lives, property, and infrastructure.

Additionally, a forecast of heavy rain accompanied by strong winds raises concerns of urban flooding in multiple districts across Punjab, including Islamabad, Mianwali, Khushab, Faisalabad, Okara, Sahiwal, Multan, and Bahawalnagar. Residents in urban areas are advised to prepare for waterlogging, flooding of low-lying neighborhoods, and possible disruptions in daily routines.

In Balochistan, districts including Zhob, Qilla Saifullah, Loralai, Barkhan, Ziarat, Dera Bugti, Sibi, Chaman, Quetta, Mastung, Kalat, Surab, Khuzdar, Awaran, and Panjgur are likely to face heavy rainfall, potentially leading to urban flooding, landslides, power outages, and disruptions in traffic flow. Local authorities have advised residents to stay alert and plan their activities accordingly to minimize risks.

Authorities have issued clear safety guidelines for public protection. Citizens are advised to avoid proximity to vulnerable and weak infrastructure such as poorly constructed buildings, mud walls, electricity poles, and billboards. Additionally, people must remain at a safe distance from streams, rivers, and rapidly flowing waterways, refraining from approaching flood-prone areas. Tourists have particularly been warned against trekking or taking photographs close to glaciers.

The public is encouraged to stay informed of ongoing weather conditions and potential hazards by regularly consulting Pakistan’s National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) alerts through their dedicated app.
