Roundtable at CAMEA-ISSI examines Iran situation and regional fallout; urges Pakistan to prioritise sovereignty, restraint, dialogue and de-escalation.

The Centre for Afghanistan Middle East and Africa (CAMEA) at the Institute of Strategic Studies Islamabad (ISSI) convened a roundtable on January 21, 2026 where former diplomats, leading academics and prominent practitioners met to assess the Iran situation and its regional consequences for Pakistan.

Participants characterised the Iran situation as fluid and complex, stressing the need for careful and continuous assessment. The discussion examined how developments in Iran could shape regional security dynamics, diplomatic engagements and cross-border stability affecting neighbouring states including Pakistan.

There was broad agreement that Pakistan should emphasise respect for Iran’s sovereignty and territorial integrity, advocate restraint, pursue sustained dialogue and support de-escalation efforts. At the same time, speakers highlighted the importance of safeguarding regional stability and Pakistan’s own security and foreign policy interests as the situation evolves.

The session, held under the Chatham House Rule, enabled candid exchanges and concluded that Pakistan must balance cautious diplomacy with national security imperatives, remain engaged with regional partners and monitor the Iran situation closely to inform its policy approach going forward.
