**Punjab Livestock Department Holds Key Meeting to Protect and Promote Indigenous Horse Breeds**
The Punjab Livestock Department convened a high-level meeting to develop a comprehensive strategy for the identification, improvement, and international promotion of indigenous horse breeds. The session brought together leading horse breeders from across the province, representatives from Brooke Pakistan, veterinary experts, and senior departmental officials, underlining the government’s commitment to safeguarding rare equine genetic resources.
The meeting, chaired by Provincial Minister for Livestock Syed Ashiq Hussain Kirmani, focused on establishing clear criteria for breed identification, documenting the distinct physical and genetic traits of local horses, and exploring avenues for showcasing them on global platforms. Participants discussed proposals for meticulous documentation of purebred lines, measures for enhancing breeding standards, and steps to secure international representation for Pakistani horse breeds.
Experts at the gathering highlighted the urgent need to compile comprehensive data records for indigenous breeds, warning that the absence of formal documentation could risk the extinction of these valuable genetic assets. The session underscored that preserving local breeds is critical not only for cultural heritage but also for the enrichment and diversity of Pakistan’s livestock sector.
Addressing the attendees, Livestock Secretary Ahmad Aziz Tarar stated that the department is taking robust measures for the protection of indigenous horses. He noted that efforts are underway not only to conserve local genetic lines but also to strengthen disease prevention and diagnostic facilities for equines across Punjab.
Dr. Sajjad Hussain, Director General of Research, informed the meeting that all district diagnostic laboratories in Punjab are now equipped with state-of-the-art technology for early detection of parasites and various equine diseases, ensuring timely interventions and improved animal health.
Concluding the meeting, all participants agreed on the importance of coordinated action and collaborative partnerships to ensure the survival and advancement of local horse breeds. There was consensus that joint efforts are essential for gaining international recognition for Pakistan’s valuable equine heritage.
