The ten-day Lok Mela 2025 began at the Lok Virsa Open Air Theatre on November 7 with a ceremony that opened at 5:00 pm and started with the recitation of the Holy Quran. The Federal Minister for National Heritage and Culture, Aurangzeb Khan Khichi, attended as chief guest while a large audience welcomed traditional performances from across the country.
Dr. Muhammad Waqas Saleem, Executive Director of Lok Virsa, thanked the guests and underlined the role of Lok Mela in connecting the federating units through cultural expression. He said the festival provides artisans and folk performers a national platform to exhibit their skills and helps preserve Pakistan’s cultural heritage for future generations.
The Federal Secretary for National Heritage and Culture expressed his pleasure at participating in the event in his official capacity and commended Lok Virsa’s professional work in promoting Pakistan’s culture internationally. He noted that supporting cultural initiatives like Lok Mela contributes to social harmony and counters extremism by offering meaningful community engagement.
Speaking at the inauguration, the chief guest emphasised that the festival reflects government priorities to promote public welfare, cultural development and healthy recreational opportunities. These objectives, he said, align with efforts to celebrate diversity and strengthen national unity through culture.
As part of a long-standing tradition, Lok Mela honours master artisans and folk artists each year by presenting them with a shawl or turban. This year the recognitions included master stone carver Ghulam Haider from Gilgit-Baltistan and celebrated Kashmiri folk singer Bano Rahmat, who were both warmly received by attendees.
Traditional songs and dances featured during the opening ceremony and performers earned enthusiastic applause from the audience. Lok Mela will continue until November 16, 2025, offering visitors a chance to see regional crafts, live performances and cultural exchange. Entry is Rs 200 per person with a student concession of Rs 100.
