Pakistan’s election to the UN Human Rights Council for the 2026–2028 term was welcomed as a reflection of international confidence in the country’s principled commitment to human rights, equality and justice, Federal Minister for Human Rights Senator Azam Nazeer Tarar said on 15 October 2025.
Under the leadership of Prime Minister Mian Muhammad Shehbaz Sharif, Pakistan has focused on strengthening human rights institutions and expanding measures to promote gender equality, protect vulnerable groups and foster social inclusivity across the country. These domestic efforts, the minister said, underpin Pakistan’s candidacy and its readiness to contribute meaningfully at the UN Human Rights Council.
As a member of the UN Human Rights Council, Pakistan will pursue a constructive agenda centred on dialogue, cooperation and mutual respect among states while remaining committed to universal values of dignity and human rights for all people. The ministry emphasized that Pakistan aims to bring national experience in protecting vulnerable communities into international discussions.
Officials said the 2026–2028 term offers Pakistan an opportunity to build partnerships, advocate practical solutions and reinforce its role in global human rights fora, reflecting a continued national emphasis on equality, justice and inclusive policy-making.
